An integral part of the Professional Postpartum Care Provider (PPCP) training is postpartum physiology and pathology of both the mother and the newborn, enabling the PPCP to apply best practice while monitoring recovery by critical observation, risk assessment and referral. Further training educates the PPCP to give culturally appropriate, holistic, individualised support and care (no matter the mode of birth) throughout those first precarious weeks, providing the best environment for the mother to focus on the important task of establishing breastfeeding, getting to know her baby and supporting her recovery.
